Chapter 1 An Overview of Marketing NEB Class 12 | Marketing (Mar. 308) | Unit 1 Allotted Teaching Hours: 2 Hours Topic: 1.1 Concept and Importance of Marketing Why this chapter matters: This short introductory unit builds the base for the entire Class 12 course. Before studying Product, Price, Place and Promotion in detail, we must first understand what marketing actually means and why every business, consumer and the nation needs it. 1.1 Concept of Marketing The word 'Marketing' is often wrongly understood as only 'selling' or 'advertising'. In reality, selling is just one small part of marketing. Marketing is a much wider process that starts even before a product is made (by identifying customer needs) and continues even after the sale is completed (through after-sales service and customer relationship). A. Meaning and Definitions In simple words, Marketing is the process of identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer needs and wants profitably, through the creation, communication, delivery and exchange of goods, services and ideas. American Marketing Association (AMA): "Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large."
Marketing | Class 12 Ch. 1
Philip Kotler: "Marketing is a social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and value with others." In short: Marketing = Understanding customers -> Creating value -> Delivering value -> Building long-term relationship -> Earning profit in return. B. Core Concepts of Marketing To understand marketing fully, we must understand a chain of five linked ideas: - Needs - basic human requirements (food, clothing, shelter, safety, belonging). - Wants - needs shaped by culture, personality and individual preference (e.g. a hungry person in Nepal wants dal-bhat; in Italy, pasta). - Demands - wants backed by buying power / willingness and ability to pay. - Product / Offering - anything (goods, service, idea, experience) offered to satisfy a need or want. - Exchange - the act of obtaining a desired product from someone by offering something of value in return - this is the core of marketing. - Market - the set of actual and potential buyers of a product. C. Evolution / Orientations of Marketing Businesses have not always thought about marketing the same way. Over time, five different 'orientations' (ways of thinking) developed: - 1. Production Concept - Consumers prefer products that are cheap and widely available. Focus: mass production & distribution efficiency. (Old idea, when supply is less than demand). - 2. Product Concept - Consumers prefer quality, performance and innovative features. Focus: continuous product improvement. - 3. Selling Concept - Consumers won't buy enough unless the firm undertakes a large selling and promotion effort. Focus: aggressive selling & advertising, pushing existing products. - 4. Marketing Concept - Achieving organisational goals depends on knowing the needs and wants of target markets and delivering satisfaction better than competitors. Focus: customer-centric, 'find a need and fill it'.

- 5. Societal Marketing Concept - Satisfy customer needs profitably while also preserving/enhancing the well-being of society (environment, health, ethics). Exam tip: If asked 'What is the modern concept of marketing?' - answer with Marketing Concept and Societal Marketing Concept, since today's businesses focus on customer satisfaction along with social responsibility. D. Features / Nature of Marketing - It is a customer-oriented process - starts and ends with the customer. - It is a continuous / ongoing process, not a one-time activity. - It involves an exchange of value between two or more parties. - It is a system of activities - product planning, pricing, promotion, distribution. - It aims at mutual benefit - profit for the seller, satisfaction for the buyer. - It is applicable to goods, services and ideas, in profit as well as non-profit organisations. 1.2 Importance of Marketing Marketing is not important only for a business firm - it plays a vital role for consumers and for the whole nation as well. We can study its importance under three heads: A. Importance to the Business Firm - Revenue and profit: Sales generated through marketing are the main source of income for a firm. - Guides production: Marketing research tells the firm what, when and how much to produce. - Builds brand image and goodwill in the market, creating customer loyalty. - Helps in decision-making regarding product design, price, place and promotion. - Creates competitive advantage and helps the firm survive and grow in a competitive market. - Generates employment in sales, advertising, distribution, market research, etc. B. Importance to the Consumer
Marketing | Class 12 Ch. 1
- Provides a wide variety of goods and services to choose from. - Gives information about products through advertising and labelling, helping consumers make informed choices. - Ensures availability of the right product at the right place and right time. - Encourages firms to improve quality and offer fair price due to competition. - Raises the standard of living by satisfying diverse needs and wants. C. Importance to Society / Nation (Economy) - Contributes to economic development by linking production with consumption. - Creates large-scale employment opportunities (transport, warehousing, retailing, advertising). - Encourages efficient use of national resources through organised production and distribution. - Helps in capital formation and mobilisation of savings/investment through business growth. - Supports foreign trade / export earnings through international marketing. - Improves overall standard of living and welfare of the people of the country. One-line summary: Marketing benefits the firm (profit & growth), the consumer (satisfaction & choice), and the nation (employment & development) all at the same time. Quick Revision - Key Points to Remember - Marketing is NOT the same as Selling. Selling is only a part of marketing. - Chain: Needs -> Wants -> Demands -> Product -> Exchange -> Market. - 5 Orientations: Production -> Product -> Selling -> Marketing -> Societal. - Modern marketing = customer satisfaction + social responsibility. - Importance covers 3 groups: Business firm, Consumer, Society/Nation.
